There Are Two Sides to Every Debt

Source: Aol

“Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Ro Khanna of California introduced a bill last week that, in their telling, would ‘eliminate’ medical debt. But there are two sides to every debt: One party’s liability is another party’s asset. And we have a word for taking away people’s assets by force: robbery. Sanders and Khanna’s legislation would amount to robbing Americans, declaring that debts owed to them are no longer valid or binding. And why should those Americans be made to forfeit their property? Because they did something unforgivable: They helped people to get health care. And there you have it: American progressivism, 2024 A.D.” (05/13/24)

Only our enemies commit war crimes

Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Connor Echols

“On NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken struck back at claims that U.S. officials let Israel dodge American laws regarding weapons transfers. ‘We don’t have double standards,’ Blinken said. ‘We treat Israel, one of our closest allies and partners, just as we would treat any other country, including in assessing something like international humanitarian law and its compliance with that law.’ Luckily for observers, Blinken has left a substantial public record against which one can test this claim. His own department’s statements and actions undercut this supposed impartiality. Indeed, all available evidence indicates that U.S. officials hold Israel to a lower standard than just about any other country.” (05/13/24)

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker flees to Europe after prison and flogging sentence

Source: CNN

“Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof says he has fled his home country to an undisclosed location in Europe after a court in Iran sentenced him to prison on national security charges. Rasoulof condemned the Iranian government in an Instagram post on Monday, calling it a tyrannical and oppressive regime, and posting a video that showed him crossing the country’s mountainous border. … Rasoulof is among several high-profile artists to have been caught up in a widening crackdown on dissent by Iranian authorities since nationwide protests broke out over the 2022 [police murder] of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly. Rasoulof, whose recent films have been critical of the Iranian government, was among a group of artists and filmmakers who signed a letter criticizing the violent response of security forces to quell a 2022 protest over a building collapse in the southwestern city of Abadan that killed more than 40 people.” (05/13/24)

Biden Lets Israel Off the Hook Again

Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

“The administration report is a disgraceful evasion of the requirements of U.S. law and the president’s own stated policy. The U.S. is taking Israeli assurances at face value when the evidence is overwhelming that these assurances are false, and it is doing so against the best advice of its own professional experts. The Biden administration is once again making a mockery of both U.S. and international law, and it does this so it can keep funneling weapons into an atrocious war that it ought to be ending.” (05/31/24)

Palestine: More than half a million flee fighting in Rafah and northern Gaza, UN says

Source: WSPA 7 News

“More than half a million Palestinians have been displaced in recent days by escalating Israeli military operations in southern and northern Gaza, the United Nations says. Around 450,000 Palestinians were driven out of Rafah in Gaza’s south over the past week, the United Nations’ agency for Palestinian refugees said Tuesday. There were roughly 1.3 million people sheltering in Rafah before Israel began pushing into the city, which Israel says is the last Hamas stronghold. Israeli forces are also battling Hamas militants in northern Gaza, where the army had launched major operations earlier in the war. The army’s evacuation orders issued Saturday have displaced around 100,000 people so far, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters Monday. Palestinian officials say Israeli strikes in central Gaza killed at least 12 people overnight and into Tuesday.” (05/14/24)

Psychiatry is Vexing Americans and Subverting Freedom

Source: JimBovard.com
by James Bovard

“Psychiatry is ruining more lives than ever before. The New York Times recently showcased psychiatric ‘prevalence inflation’ — a vast increase in reported mental illness among teenagers because they are encouraged to view normal symptoms as grave maladies requiring intervention. … Hungarian-American psychiatrist Thomas Szasz warned in the last century, ‘Psychiatrists manufacture mental diagnoses the way the Vatican manufactures saints.’ But Szasz’s deft ridicule did nothing to prevent a sham stampede.” (05/13/24)

Cryptoverse: Retail traders sit out bitcoin rally

Source: Reuters

“What’s happened to the army of retail traders who used to drive bitcoin’s biggest rallies? U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase reported just $56 billion in consumer trading volumes in the first quarter of 2024, when bitcoin leapt to record heights close to $74,000. While that represents a fledgling recovery in retail interest — almost double the level in the final quarter of last year — it’s way below the $133.75 billion quarterly average during the last comparable rally in 2021. … Some small-time investors are still nursing the chills of the more than two-year long crypto winter, when bitcoin stayed limp at levels between $20,000 to $30,000. Billions of customer funds were also trapped in the implosion of high profile crypto companies, including Three Arrows Capital, Celsius Network and FTX, whose founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud.” (05/14/24)
